We're expanding into Northumberland with three new performing arts groups
Launching in September 2026:
Performing Arts Academy at Alnwick Playhouse, DJ Academy at Blyth Family Hub and Youth Theatre group (age 10-19) at Morpeth Pavilion

We're delighted to announce that from September 2026, The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company will launch three new performing arts groups across Northumberland, creating 48 new weekly opportunities for children, young people and adults with a learning disability and/or autism.
Our expanded Northumberland programme will include:
Performing Arts Academy at Alnwick Playhouse (ages 16+)
DJ Academy in Blyth (ages 16+)
Youth Theatre in Morpeth for young people aged 10–19
The new groups will provide opportunities for people with a learning disability and autistic people to explore theatre, music and performance, develop new skills, build confidence and make meaningful social connections. The new Youth Theatre will offer young people a dedicated space to be creative, make friends and have fun while developing skills in drama, storytelling and performance.
Together with our Morpeth Performing Arts Academy (which is currently full and has a waiting list), these new groups will strengthen our creative community across Northumberland, giving more people the opportunity to share their ideas and take part in ambitious performing arts projects.
Jay Hare, CEO of The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company, said:
"At The Twisting Ducks, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to be creative, develop skills and have their voices heard. The success of our Morpeth Performing Arts Academy demonstrates the high demand for inclusive arts opportunities in Northumberland, and we're delighted to be working with Alnwick Playhouse, Northumberland Family Hubs and Morpeth Town Council to expand our programme to reach more people. These new groups will give more people the chance to build confidence, be part of a creative community and achieve their ambitions through performing arts."
Lisa Kelly, Trustee and member of The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company, said:
"I have been with The Twisting Ducks for years. I'm really proud of the work we do. Getting our voices and our stories heard is so important to me and to all our members. I have made lifelong friends through my groups. When I moved from Newcastle to Northumberland, I missed everyone so much because the journey was just too long, and there was nothing like The Twisting Ducks in Alnwick. Now we're setting up a new academy in my local theatre, Alnwick Playhouse, I'm over the moon. I can't wait – it's so exciting!"
The expanded programme in Northumberland has been made possible thanks to funding from The Garfield Weston Foundation and the Victoria Wood Foundation, alongside support from Alnwick Playhouse, Northumberland Family Hubs at Northumberland County Council and Morpeth Town Council.
