Limited spaces available to join The Twisting Ducks funded theatre groups
The Twisting Ducks is offering a rare opportunity for local people with a learning disability and autistic people to join funded theatre groups taking place weekly in Newcastle upon Tyne and Wallsend, North Tyneside.

We are looking to welcome new members and further diversify our theatre groups so that all voices are represented. We welcome applications from all backgrounds, and in particular, would love to hear from people from the global majority, young people (18-25), women, non-binary, and trans people.

Membership is free of charge. No previous performing experience is needed, just an interest in performing and a commitment to attend weekly sessions. If you're creative, love to express yourself, and want to be part of a supportive and inspiring community, we’d love to hear from you.

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company provides accessible arts opportunities for people with learning disabilities and autistic people across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland. The charity supports over 800 people a year to express themselves creatively, to develop skills and social connections, and to achieve aspirations as performers, musicians and DJ's. By using issue–based art forms, The Twisting Ducks help people speak up about social issues to provoke thought and stimulate change.

The Twisting Ducks Core Theatre Group
Weekly Mondays, 10am - 3pm at Wallsend Memorial Hall, North Tyneside
This group is for people with a learning disability and autistic people age 16+ who live in North Tyneside

The Core Theatre group are The Twisting Ducks' established performance group, creating ambitious, socially engaged work led by people with a learning disability and autistic people. The Core Group doesn’t just make theatre, members also lead creative workshops, deliver training, and are commissioned to create films and accessible information resources. They use performance and storytelling as tools to influence change, challenge inequalities, and share lived experience with wider audiences.

Current project: Future Focus workshops, performance, and film

Future Focus is a National Lottery-funded project, developed in response to the lived experience and anxiety of people with a learning disability caused by not having housing and support plans in place for when parents and carers are no longer able to offer support.

As part of this project, group members will:

Lead creative workshops with parents and carers
Explore experiences and ideas around housing and support
Develop and perform a play
Create a film

The performance and film will be showcased at a special event in North Tyneside for an invited audience of people with a learning disability, carers and service providers, giving members the chance to share their lived experience and spark discussion.

Spectrum Theatre Group
Weekly Thursdays, 10am - 3pm at Northern Stage, Newcastle upon Tyne
This group is for people with a learning disability and autistic people age 16+ who live in Newcastle upon Tyne

Spectrum Theatre Group meets weekly at Northern Stage, a nationally renowned theatre in the heart of Newcastle. It’s an exciting time to join Spectrum, as the group is currently developing BUS , a major two-year immersive theatre and storytelling project funded by Arts Council England's National Lottery Project grants and Newcastle Cultural Investment Fund.

About the BUS project
BUS explores everyday experiences and emotions of travelling by bus, from the people we meet to the stories that unfold along the way.

Throughout 2026, Spectrum Theatre Group will:

Lead creative workshops across Newcastle, bringing together people from marginalised communities, including people with a learning disability and autistic people, young people, refugees, older people, and LGBTQ+ communities, to share their stories and experiences of travelling by bus.
Develop a new, immersive, multimedia performance staged on a bus, rather than in a traditional theatre.

In 2027, the Twisting Ducks Bus will tour venues in Newcastle and Sunderland, visiting schools, arts venues and festivals, including Sunderland Pride, Newcastle Mela, Northern Stage and Arts Centre Washington, inviting audiences to experience live performances based on real journeys, real people, and real voices.

A new play by The Twisting Ducks Customs House Academy

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company presents Miners, Mariners and Me , a new performance written and performed by local artists with a learning disability and autistic artists, taking place at The Customs House , South Shields on Tuesday 17th March 2026 . The performance takes place during Neurodiversity Celebration Week , a global initiative that celebrates the skills and talents of neurodivergent people while challenging stereotypes about neurological differences.

Miners, Mariners and Me rediscovers the story of South Shields, past and present, through drama, song and dance. Along the way, audiences will journey to Roman Arbeia, venture down the coal mines and explore the salty chaos of the fishing industry. Celebrating the vibrant people and iconic figures who have helped shape the town into what it is today, Miners, Mariners and Me is funny, playful and full of heart, and presents South Shields as seen through the eyes of the people who call it home.

The performers, who meet weekly at The Customs House, are part of The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company, a charity providing accessible arts opportunities for people with a learning disability and autistic people across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland. The Twisting Ducks supports over 800 people a year to express themselves creatively, develop skills and social connections, and to achieve aspirations as performers, musicians and DJs.

The Twisting Ducks Core Theatre group awarded £19,989 from The National Lottery Community Fund

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company has been awarded a grant of 19,989 from The National Lottery Community Fund to create a film exploring the theme of future housing and support needs for people with a learning disability.

Led by artists with a learning disability, this grant will enable The Twisting Ducks Core group to deliver creative workshops with parents and carers and produce a film that explores this theme from parent and carer perspectives. The group developed the project in response to their own lived experience and anxiety caused by not having housing and support plans in place for when parents and carers are no longer able to support them.

The film will be showcased at an event in North Tyneside, where attendees, including people with a learning disability, carers and service providers, will be supported to share their ideas for ‘planning for the future’.

Jay Hare, CEO at The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company, said: “For many people with a learning disability and their families, the future can feel uncertain, especially when there isn’t a clear plan for housing and support. This project has grown directly from the lived experience of our artists who want to open up honest conversations that families often find difficult to start. All aboard for BUS, a new immersive theatre project across Newcastle and Sunderland

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company has been awarded £95,551 from Arts Council England’s National Lottery Project Grants and £36,905 from Community Foundation, Newcastle Culture Investment Fund for Bus, a 2-year immersive theatre and storytelling project by artists with a learning disability and autistic artists across Newcastle and Sunderland.

Led by members of The Twisting Ducks theatre groups, Spectrum (based at Northern Stage, Newcastle) and Sunderland Platform (based at Arts Centre Washington, Tyne and Wear), Bus explores everyday experiences and emotions of travelling by bus, from the people we meet to the stories that unfold along the way.

Throughout 2026, a series of creative workshops across Newcastle and Sunderland will bring together people from marginalised communities, including people with a learning disability and autistic people, young people, refugees, older people, and LGBTQ+ communities to share their stories and feelings about travelling by bus. The stories and anecdotes gathered during these workshops will feed into the development of a new, immersive, multimedia performance, staged not in a traditional theatre but on a bus.

Alongside the live experience, an online Digital Story Bank will showcase recordings and creative contributions made by participants throughout the project. These stories will be collected and shared via QR codes placed at bus and Metro stations across the North East region, in partnership with Nexus.

Jan Willem van den Bosch, Lead facilitator and Project Manager at The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company said: “The Twisting Ducks Bus project gives us a unique opportunity to take our work beyond traditional theatre spaces to reach new audiences, especially other marginalised communities across Newcastle and Sunderland. We all use the bus, and everyone has a story to tell. This project is about listening to those stories and creating something real and meaningful that people can connect with.”

The Twisting Ducks awarded £30,000 grant from Garfield Weston Foundation

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company has been awarded a £30,000 grant over two years from the Garfield Weston Foundation , a family-founded grant-maker that supports charities across the UK working to make a positive difference in their communities.

The grant will support the Twisting Ducks to continue creating accessible opportunities for people with a learning disability and autistic people to come together and create, to have their voices heard, and to ensure the uniqueness and relevance of their art reaches more people.

This generous grant will help us continue to do what matters most - creating spaces where people with a learning disability and autistic people can express themselves through the arts, provoking thought and stimulating change. Fresh club night awarded Small Sparks plus grant

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company has been awarded a Small Sparks Plus grant of £3,000 from Newcastle City Council, administered by Connected Voice, to support Fresh Club Night, an inclusive club night run by DJs with a learning disability and autistic DJs since 1998.

Taking place on the first Thursday of each month at World Headquarters nightclub in Newcastle, Fresh club night is a welcoming, supportive night out for people with a learning disability, autistic people, and their friends, families, and carers. DJs from The Twisting Ducks DJ Academy in Wallsend perform at each event, bringing different themes every month, from 90’s Night to Girl bands vs. Boy bands .

The Small Sparks Plus scheme helps VCSE organisations improve the health and wellbeing of local communities. This grant will enable The Twisting Ducks to continue delivering the monthly club night, providing an opportunity for people with a learning disability and autistic people to lead full and active social lives.

Fresh Club Night supports the Stay Up Late campaign, a national movement challenging restrictive social care practices and tackling social isolation by making it normal for people with a learning disability and autistic people to go out and party.

Hannah Eldridge, DJ Academy facilitator at The Twisting Ducks, said: “Fresh Club Night is such an important space for our community. It’s an opportunity for our DJs to express themselves and showcase their skills, and for everyone attending to enjoy great music, build social connections, and most importantly, have loads of fun. Our DJs work so hard to create a brilliant atmosphere every month, and we’re thrilled that this funding means we can keep the night going and welcome even more people.”

Marc McAndrew, member of The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company, and a regular attendee of Fresh Club Night, said: “I’ve been going to Fresh since I was 18, I'm now 43. I love going to Fresh Club night. It's a brilliant atmosphere, I see friends that I haven’t seen for a long time or would not see unless I went there. You also get to meet new people you have not met before, I’ve made loads of new friends there, and found a girlfriend there too. The music is great, and they always have new up-to-date music as well as some classics, which makes me get up and dance. I love Fresh, it's great and I look forward to it each month. I can’t wait for the Halloween one, bring it on!”

Team Twisting Ducks raise over £3000 at Great North Run 2025

Team Twisting Ducks raised an incredible £3,099 by taking part in the AJ Bell Great North Run 2025, more than double our original target of £1,400!

Seven fantastic runners, Cat, Michael, Sonia, Ailsa, Conor, Nigel and Sarah-Jane, took on the challenge, each with a fundraising target of £200. Together, they went above and beyond, showing just how much support there is for The Twisting Ducks’ work.

Every pound raised will support our work across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland, helping people with a learning disability and autistic people to express themselves creatively, develop skills and social connections, and achieve aspirations as performers, musicians and DJs.

Cheering on Team Twisting Ducks at the AJBell Great North Run 2025

The Twisting Ducks is delighted to have seven amazing runners taking on the AJBell Great North Run on Sunday 7th September 2025. The team includes dedicated supporters and members of staff, who collectively aim to raise over £1,500. All funds raised will directly support The Twisting Ducks’work with people with learning disabilities and autistic people across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland.

Among them is Ailsa, who said: “I have witnessed how inaccessible the arts can be for parts of our community in the North East. I feel passionate about supporting this charity who are actively promoting and striving towards a more accessible and equitable world. They are championing the voices of local people and celebrating what makes everyone unique.”

Also on the team, Conor, said: "Having worked in the Theatre industry myself as well as studying & graduating with a Masters Degree (MA) in Theatre, I've seen first hand what incredible work charities like Twisting Ducks do towards bringing accessibility and opportunities to those who have difficulties accessing theatre."

Father and daughter duo, Nigel and Sarah Jane are running together. Sarah Jane said: "I have personally seen the benefits it offers all its' members like my auntie Fiona. Their shows never fail to bring a smile to everyones' faces!"

Cat, Drama Facilitator at The Twisting Ducks, said: "I'm really excited to use this opportunity to prove a point to myself, raise awareness for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome AND raise vital funds for The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company, a charity I've had the joy of working for, for the past 4 years. Where everyday we're raising awareness and making beautiful work."

Join our group for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities

Our Arts Group for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) is an exciting opportunity for people to explore their creativity.

Each week, participants are immersed in a sensory experience through sound, light, texture, and movement. Using stimuli such as music, scarves, lights, and more, we create a sensory-rich environment that invites creative expression in many different forms.

The sessions are centred on supporting people with PMLD to make meaningful artistic choices and contribute to a collaborative exhibition planned for September 2025. Together, the group creates and captures soundscapes and visual artworks inspired by their own interests and preferences. While participants themselves are not photographed or filmed, they play an active role in the creative process, shaping the audio and visual outcomes of the work.

The group takes place weekly on Wednesdays at Wallsend Library

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company presents Hi, I'm Charlie, a bold new play taking place at the Studio Theatre in Newcastle Theatre Royal on Sat 7 June 2025 .

Charlie faces barriers — at work, at home, in everyday life. We all face barriers though, don’t we? And actually, who really is Charlie? Written and performed by artists with learning disabilities and autistic artists from The Twisting Ducks Theatre Royal Academy, Hi, I’m Charlie explores themes of identity, perception, and what it means to feel seen.

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company provides accessible arts opportunities for people with learning disabilities and autistic people across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland. The charity supports over 800 people a year to express themselves creatively, to develop their skills and social connections, and to achieve their aspirations as performers, musicians and DJ's. By using issue–based art forms they educate and inform, and help people speak up about social issues, to provoke thought, and to stimulate change.

Hi, I’m Charlie has been a year in the making by 11 participants from the Saturday Theatre Royal Academy. A separate academy takes place on Wednesdays which creates and performs a new play each year, their most recent was What Am I Like? In November 2024.

Set in a magical version of Morpeth, the play follows a day in the life of the town’s most curious characters – featuring a bee farm, a nail salon bakery, and a volleyball café. But all is not as it seems… as magic stirs and cheese scone monsters emerge!

Written and performed by members of The Twisting Ducks' Morpeth Performing Arts Academy, Let There Bee Magic… and Scones! is a joyful exploration of home, belonging, and community connection. With a vibrant mix of comedy, drag, music, and dance, the show builds to a dazzling cabaret finale that brings Morpeth’s fantastical world to life.

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company presents Dregs Opera , a bold new musical inspired by the true story of Alonzo Johnson—a historic local queer figure convicted and deported to Tasmania because of his sexuality. This powerful production takes the stage at Arts Centre Washington on Friday 4th April 2025.

Dregs Opera follows the journey of local historic figure Alonzo Johnson, a 19th-century 'strolling player' (a travelling performer) who defied the legal and social conventions of his time. Despite multiple convictions for theft and for what was then considered an 'unnatural crime,' Johnson remained true to himself. He was known to dress in women’s clothing and was openly involved in a romantic relationship with a fellow artist, painter David Denham. Their arrest in Newcastle in 1844 led to a death sentence, later commuted, by none other than Queen Victoria, to transportation to Tasmania. Johnson’s largely forgotten story challenges 19th-century narratives of LGBTQ+ identity and highlights the courage of those who defied societal norms.

Written and performed by artists with learning disabilities and autistic artists, Dregs Opera is a new, original work by the Sunderland Platform theatre group at The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company. Presented as an adaptation of Gay’s Beggar’s Opera and Brecht’s Threepenny Opera , Dregs Opera features live music by members of the local all-female jazz group Wild Women of Wylam , including Andrea CE Harris, (AKA Hannah Jones), whose iconic cover of Gloria Gaynor’s I Am What I Am became a 1990’s LGBTQ+ club anthem.

The lead role of Alonzo Johnson is played by Sam Docherty, an actor, model, and local drag artist known as Celine DoOne. Alongside his work with The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company, Sam, who has Down syndrome, also works on campaigns for disability rights.

The Twisting Ducks celebrate £30,000 grant from The Fore to expand Accessible Health Resource service

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company is delighted to announce it has been awarded £30,000 from The Fore, a venture philanthropy fund in the UK supporting small charities to transform lives and society. This significant award will allow The Twisting Ducks to grow its commissioned work and expand its Accessible Health Resource , a vital service providing accessible health information for people with learning disabilities and autistic people, and innovative awareness-raising resources for health and social care professionals.

In addition, the grant will support The Twisting Ducks in its mission to create employment opportunities for artists with learning disabilities and autistic artists, providing a platform for their creative talents while fostering inclusion and representation in the arts.

The Twisting Ducks Accessible Health Resource service works with partners and commissioners to develop bespoke, targeted resources that communicate information in accessible and creative ways, including clear English or EasyRead, interactive surveys, film-making, performance, creative consultation workshops and learning disability and autism-led training sessions.

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company is delighted to announce it has been awarded £22,000 from the Postcode Neighbourhood Trust, raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. This vital funding will support people with learning disabilities and autistic people to develop original performance work in North Tyneside and enable outreach workshops to the wider learning disability community in North Tyneside.

With vibrant costumes, creative use of green screens, and a glam rock vibe, YouTube Killer celebrates self-expression and the joy of making music together.

The Twist, said: "It’s about rocking out, having fun and having a laugh. We brainstormed ideas and liked the idea of a phoenix, which inspired the chorus lyrics. We talked about YouTube because everyone watches YouTube and we want everyone to listen to our music. The video is inspired by lots of 70s glam rock bands like Queen, Kiss and Sweet. It is a funny video with lots of costumes and green screens."

Written and performed by artists with learning disabilities and autistic artists, The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company presents What am I like!? , an intricate movement performance to be presented at St James’s United Reformed Church, Newcastle upon Tyne on Wednesday 20th November 2024.

What am I like!? follows a group of strangers as they explore their unique identities through a series of fun and lively moments. From the fun of the fairground, and the glitz of the catwalk, to the thrill of a party and the lure of holidays, each chapter is framed by questions and is filled with laughter and heartfelt moments. As characters share their stories and discover new things about themselves, they realise that their differences bring them closer together, making their bonds even stronger.

Set against a backdrop of sing-along hits, What Am I Like!? promises to entertain with a mix of humour, lively performances, and an inspiring message about romance, diversity and acceptance.

The performers, who meet weekly at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal, are part of The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company, a charitable incorporated organisation working with people with learning disabilities and autistic people to tackle inequalities and effect social change through performing arts. Working across Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company supports over 800 people a year to share their stories, develop their artistic skills and to ensure the uniqueness and relevance of their art reaches more people.

Team Twisting Ducks smash fundraising target at AJBell Great North Run

On 8 September 2024, five committed supporters took on the AJ Bell Great North Run, raising an impressive £2,248 for The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company, significantly surpassing their original goal of £1,500. The funds raised will directly support The Twisting Ducks’ performing arts groups and academies, benefiting people with learning disabilities and autistic people across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland.

Jay Hare, CEO of The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company, said: "We are incredibly grateful to everyone who ran on behalf of The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company at the AJ Bell Great North Run. A special thanks to The Card Factory Foundation for their generosity in matching Jane's sponsorship total, adding an extra £700 to the total raised. This incredible support will have a lasting impact on our members, enabling us to continue championing the diversity, creativity and citizenship of people with learning disabilities and autistic people."

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company empowers over 800 individuals each year through performing arts, using creativity to tackle inequalities and bring about social change. The funds raised through the Great North Run will help the Twisting Ducks further its reach and continue its work in creating a platform where the voices and stories of people with learning disabilities and autism can be heard and appreciated.

Team Twisting Ducks: Runners gear up to support The Twisting Ducks in AJBell Great North Run

Five dedicated supporters are set to lace up their running shoes for The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company in this year’s AJBell Great North Run on 8 September 2024. Collectively, they aim to raise over £1,500, with all funds directly supporting the charity’s performing arts groups and academies across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland.

60,000 determined and dedicated runners make the AJ Bell Great North Run the World’s biggest and best half marathon – famous for its warm North East welcome, unbeatable atmosphere and the millions raised for good causes. The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation that works with people with learning disabilities and autistic people to tackle inequalities and effect social change through performing arts and issue-based theatre. Working across Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company empowers over 500 people a year to share their stories, develop their artistic skills and to ensure the uniqueness and relevance of their art reaches more people.

Among the runners is Sadie Cookson, who said: “I’m running for The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company - an amazing organization that provides accessible arts opportunities for people with learning disabilities and autistic people across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland.”

Lisa, Trustee and Member of the core Twisting Ducks drama group, said: “I’m very grateful for everyone taking part in the Great North Run, going to so much effort to help our charity. It means so much to me and everyone in our charity. Your donations mean we can make sure we get more peoples voices heard in our work. Fresh Club Night welcomes guest DJs from The Lawnmowers Independent Theatre Company

Fresh Club Night is set to return for a fun-filled evening of music and dance at World Headquarters on Thursday 1st August 2024. Featuring DJs with learning disabilities and autistic DJs from The Twisting Ducks DJ Academy, this month's event is set to be extra special with guest performances from DJs at The Lawnmowers Independent Theatre Company joining the lineup.

From rock and punk, to pop sing-along classics, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in this fun-filled night of music and dancing.

Celebrating Kris' Graduation following 5 month internship with The Twisting Ducks

On Wednesday 24th July, Kris graduated from NHS Choices College following a 5 month internship with The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company. During his internship, Kris worked with staff and members, contributing to performances and events across The Twisting Ducks Performing Arts Academies and programmes.

To express their gratitude to Kris, members of our performing arts academies and programmes, alongside staff at The Twisting Ducks, created a video sharing their memories, highlights and thanks for all of Kris's hard work.

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company facilitated this internship in partnership with NHS Choices College, who promote employment opportunities for Interns with learning difficulties/ disabilities and/ or Autism through a supported internship course.

The Twisting Ducks take part in Washington 60 Celebration Day

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company took part in Washington 60 Celebration Day, a day of music, performances and family activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Washington New Town. The festival-style celebration day took place on Saturday 20 July 2024 at the Northern Area Playing Fields from midday until 9pm.

Members of The Twisting Ducks Sunderland group, based at Arts Centre Washington, performed an excerpt from their recent show My Washington, My Sunderland at 1.45pm on Stage 2. Written and performed by artists with learning disabilities and autistic artists, this cabaret-style performance explores Sunderland and Washington through song, dance and drama.

In preparation for the performance, the group came together to design their own t-shirts, featuring their own slogan ‘You think I am behind? Look who’s in front!”

Local acts and community groups including theatre, spoken word and acoustic music performed on Stage 2 throughout the day, and an exhibitor tent housed Washington-based organisations telling the story of Washington past and present. The Main Stage line up was headlined by Washington's own Martin Stephenson and the Daintees, with further performances from Smoove and Turrell and The Revolutionaires.

The Twisting Ducks Sunderland Platform has been supported by an award from Postcode Neighbourhood Trust, a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, as well as support from Washington Heritage Partnership and Sunderland Culture.

Jan Willem van den Bosch, Lead facilitator and project manager at The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company said: “We were delighted to be invited to perform at Washington 60 Celebration Day. Our recent show, My Washington My Sunderland, is all about what it means to call Washington and Sunderland home, so we were excited to present an excerpt of the show as part of Washington’s 60th birthday celebrations.”

Celebrating Learning Disability week at the Customs House

On Tuesday 18th June, The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company presented an afternoon of performances at The Customs House for Learning Disability week to an audience including the Mayor of South Tyneside, Cllr Fay Cunningham, and the North East Dolly Parton, Andrea Pattison.

The group presented Dolly’s Boot’s , a new play created and performed by artists with learning disabilities and autistic artists from the Twisting Ducks’ Performing Arts Academy based at The Customs House. Set against a backdrop of Dolly Parton's timeless classics as well as other sing-along favourites, the play followed the heartwarming tale of ‘Dolly’ and her triumph over adversity to follow her dreams to perform on stage.

The group were delighted to perform for VIPs including the North East Dolly Parton, Andrea Pattison, who is performing in ‘The Dolly Parton Story’ at The Customs House on Friday 21st June, as well as the Mayor of South Tyneside, Cllr Fay Cunningham.

In addition, audiences enjoyed a performance by The Twist, a band composed of musicians with learning disabilities and autistic musicians from The Twisting Ducks Band Academy. The performed a set list of popular covers as well as original material exploring their own lived experience.

Learning Disability Week is dedicated to ensuring people with learning disabilities are seen, heard, and valued. New play at Live Theatre demonstrates employment challenges for people with learning disabilities and autistic people

Written and performed by artists with learning disabilities and autistic artists, ‘Employment Roulette’ is the latest play by The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company to be presented at Live Theatre, Newcastle Quayside on Saturday 4th May 2024.

The play follows the journey of three job candidates with learning disabilities and autism as they navigate searching for a job. However, what begins as a typical job interview transforms into a dystopian game-show-style contest. Audiences will see candidates compete in weird and wonderful rounds, with the ultimate prize being a job offer. Humorous, entertaining and thought-provoking, the play explores the unnecessary employment barriers faced by people with learning disabilities and autistic people, sparking broader discussions about how society can create a more equitable environment for all job seekers.

The performers, who meet weekly at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal, are part of The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company, a charitable incorporated organisation that works with people with learning disabilities and autistic people to tackle inequalities and effect social change through performing arts. Cat Catizone, Drama facilitator at The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company, said: “Employment Roulette is unique and thought-provoking. It’s very funny but also poignant, and audiences will gain insight into the unnecessary barriers to employment encountered by people with learning disabilities and autistic people. We hope the show will spark conversations about inclusivity, accessibility, and the need for changes in how employers assess candidates.”

Marc, performer in Employment Roulette , said: “Our play Employment Roulette is about people with learning disabilities finding it hard to get a job, because of all the barriers out there. Some employers might not want to take people on, a lot of people need support and don't always know where to get it. I do paid work delivering training for the Twisting Ducks and it makes me feel confident. I think more people should have the opportunity to work"

Home is where the heart is: Sunderland group present 'My Sunderland, My Washington' at Arts Centre Washington

The Twisting Ducks Theatre Company presents My Sunderland, My Washington, a new play created and performed by local artists with learning disabilities and autistic artists, at Arts Centre Washington on Friday 26th April 2024.

In this cabaret-style performance, audiences are taken on a whistle-stop tour of Sunderland and Washington through song, dance, film, and drama. Celebrating local landmarks including The Stadium of Light, Roker Pier, Washington Old Hall, and the Sunderland Empire, the play shares stories of local people, history, and culture - from the town’s link to the establishment of the NHS to the infamous Victorian serial killer, Mary Anne Cotton. Through joyful and emotive storytelling, My Sunderland, My Washington explores what it feels like to call Sunderland and Washington home, especially poignant as Washington celebrates its 60th birthday.
